Reliance Jio lost 4 crore subscribers in last 6 months, yet company happy; Learn Ambani's new game plan

Vodafone's active subscribers are steadily declining

Millions of subscribers are dropping out of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio every month. Jio has lost 40 million subscribers in the last 6 months. That is five times more than the number of subscribers leaving Vodafone-Idea. Airtel, on the other hand, has a growing number of subscribers. Airtel has added 4 million new subscribers in the last 6 months.

Today in Bhaskar Indepath we will find out why this is good news for Reliance Jio despite constantly losing subscribers. Is this Mukesh Ambani's new game plan?

The trend of subscribers in the last 6 months
If we look at the average of the last 6 months, Reliance Jio has lost about 68 lakh subscribers per month and Vodafone Idea has lost about 12 lakh subscribers per month. Meanwhile, Airtel has added 6 lakh new subscribers every month.

Losing subscribers is also good news for Geo.
Losing subscribers is half the truth of this story. Even though Reliance Jio is losing subscribers, its active subscribers are steadily increasing. That is, only those subscribers of Geo are declining, from which the company is not getting any revenue.

This means that those who have a Geo SIM, but they do not recharge regularly. The whole truth is that in the market share of active subscribers, Geo surpassed Airtel in July 2021. The market share of Geo's active subscribers has been steadily increasing since then.

This is the first time that the active subscriber rate of Geo has exceeded 90%. For a long time, the rate of active subscribers was less than 80%.

Growing active subscribers to Geo and Airtel means
India's top three telecom companies hiked tariff rates by 20-25% in November 2021. Experts believe that the increase in active subscribers is an indication that users have accepted the increased tariff. Among these, Reliance Jio is the market leader by increasing the number of most active subscribers. Then comes Airtel's number. Vodafone's active subscribers are steadily declining. All of these factors are also indicating that tariffs may rise once again. This is not a good sign for those telecom users.

When Mukesh Ambani's new game-plan
Geo was launched in 2016, India's telecom market was full of competition. Despite having 8 companies, users had to pay an average of 58 paisa for a 1 minute call. Geo was the first to decide to occupy the market.

In its early days, Geo provided unlimited data and high quality calling service at very low cost. It also forced other telecom operators to change their business models. Gradually the competition from the market diminished and Geo's dominance increased. Now there are only 3 companies left in the Indian telecom market.

Experts believe that Geo is now making some changes to its strategy. Now Geo's focus is on increasing its ARPU (average revenue per user). For that, it is focusing on the number of its active users. In an interview last year, Mukesh Ambani said that Geo was now focusing on rural and remote areas. For 2G users, the launch of Geo Phone Next is a step in that direction. Geo has made full preparations for 5G in India.
